It's not your CV - It's your references

"Applications without contactable references will not be considered" reads the job post. You're either shrugging because you don't have any references, passing the job by or confidently applying. You ought to be doing the last option. In this post, we're giving you tips on how to ensure your references are not hindering you from landing your dream job!

The deciding factor of who gets the job
References are so crucial that it can end up becoming a deciding factor of who gets the job. Why are references so important? Well, they validate everything that's on your CV. That's why it's important to be 100% honest in your CV and your interview because any lies told about the type of person you are or the responsibilities you had, could cost you your job.

References are important but not as important as prepping for the interview and ensuring your CV is up to date and accurately depicts your personality. References are just a small hurdle in the race to find your dream job.

A good reference can...
Ensure that your references can at least answer the following questions about you:
  • ‪Overall performance at work‬
  • ‪Reason for leaving previous job‬ ‪
  • Brief details of responsibilities ‪
  • Your skills, abilities, work ethic, punctuality and personal character
A good reference can confidently answer the questions above. To avoid miscommunication, make sure your reference is articulate and can understand the universal language of English.

Credible references
A good references needs to not only be able to answer the above questions but they also need to not be related to you. If you don't have much experience, list your tutors or lecturer but please, leave your sister and mother out. They're not credible because they are more likely to be complimentary and positive and what they have to say about you wont hold much weight.
